PASS/iGate

SIX Card Solutions is developing credit and debit card processing software for the european market. Huge amounts of card transactions are processed every day by the Acquiring Processing and Issuing Processing applications.

Details Starting with a migration project of a Forté based application to a new platform Netcetera had to convince key people that Java would be the right tool to do the job. Luckily the initial idea of migrating code with code translators was abandoned. This resulted in a cleaned up, fast implementation of the PASS system. In a second phase a large european customer is implementing it's next generation acquiring and issuing processing system with the help of SIX Card Solutions. I have the chance to serve as a software architect for both parts, trying to keep them in line.

Architect FinTop (UBS)

FinTop is a web-based application covering large parts of the financial advisory process at UBS.

Details During a consulting assignment of netcetera at UBS I replaced the application architect of the FinTop project during his internal stage. My tasks included maintenance of the application framework; implementation of new application framework features; persistency-layer redesign; Java and WSAD support; introduction and maintenance of a project wiki.

Webis

Webis enables a highly configurable but generic and browser based access to a relational database.

Details Webis is frequently used within netcetera projects for either backoffice GUIs or admin-interfaces. The framework allows the definition of a database schema in XML. Based on the XML schema, a browser based access to the DB is provided. Further configurations allow the implementation of permissions, profiles and views. My tasks included specification of features; design and implementation of the application; testing; documentation and setting up several production projects that use Webis as a backoffice application (Pathfinder, inside-it.ch). A great reward for the efforts was the possibility to present the work at JavaOne 04 in a BOF session and to get positive feedback from other Java professionals there.

Pathfinder

Pathfinder is in use as an internet based collaboration platform to plan international train connections for the european railways.

Details This completely open-source based solution was implemented by a team of netcetera engineers I had the chance to co-lead. The servlet components use the netcetera webapp-framework "Jaffa/Juice". My tasks involved design and implementation of a small rendering framework; design and implementation of the persistency layer; major implementation tasks on the application itself; build process enhancements using Ant; script based DB-setup; setup of deployment using RPM and finally bringing the application productive on the linux servers and handing it over to our operations team. During the two-year period we implemented more than a dozen iterations that were reviewed by the customer on a regular base. We are very proud of the fact that we were on time, on budget, on spec and won the Swiss-IT-Award 2004 in the category 'Project'.

HTA Biel

Summary

As an assistant at the University of applied Sciences Biel I was working at the Competence Center Electronic Commerce of the Computer Science Division. Main tasks were projects with business partners and applied research and developement in the field of mobile communications. Support of student projects and teaching of specialised lessons were minor but nevertheless important and interesting parts of my work.

Projects:

• Spirit of Bike (Mobile Communication / 2001 / Java, PHP): The Competence Center Electronic Commerce (CCEC) supported the Spirit Of Bike project with it's knowledge in internet and mobile communications technology. Receiving GPS-coordinates from the bike we were able to draw the route of the bike in real time. (Picture: Track of the Power Run from Zurich to Biel.)
• Introduction to Java3D (Optional Course / 2001 / Java3D): This is a programming oriented introduction to the Java API extension Java 3D. Java 3D is a full featured 3D-programming API providing the user good performance with a relatively simple API. The course is based on SUN's Java 3D Tutorial. Additional documentation, many links and examples can be found on the course homepage. Notice that this is only a small introduction in an optional course; There is a more thorough course to Computer Graphics by C. Schwab.
• E-Qualos (Networking / 2000 / Java Applet): Developement of a Java tool to monitor a messaging system. The collected data can be used to derive QoS indexes. Customer project during my time at the (CCEC), Biel.

Nokia, Finland

Summary

As part of my studies I had the possiblity to spend a year working "up front" in the industry. A very good trainee position at Nokia Telecommunications Oy in Finland allowed me to spend an interesting time in a foreign country. I was involved in projects at the analog interface of the DX200 switching system doing work from design over coding to intensive testing and documentation. This was indeed one of the most exciting experience of my life! (Picture: At the polar circle during my summer holidays.)

Description

Studies in Biel with main subject computer science. One year base studies in computer science, electronics and economy. The second year I chose to focus on economy as subsidiary subject. As usual for computer science students in Biel I spent then a year in the industry (see above). Finally the third school year with three consolidation subjects (Computergraphics, Marketing & Electronic Commerce, Information Systems) besides some final courses. Diploma as engineer in Computer Science (dipl. Ing. HTL in Wirtschaftsinformatik).

Projects

• SceneBuilder Java3D (Computergraphics, Diploma Project / 1999 / Java3D): SceneBuilder Java3D is a Rapid Application Developement tool for designing scene graphs graphically and generating Java3D source code afterwards.
• Stinger Simulation (Computergraphics / 1999 / Java3D): Java3D application simulating a STINGER air-defense system. The marksman can combat different targets in different VR-environments. (Application in english, documentation in german, Screenshot)
• Mã - Mathilda (Project work / 1997 / Java Applet): An Applet illustrating graphically the functional coherence of p(z)=w, where p(z) is a complex Polynome, z and w are complex variables. Besides the graphical illustration in the complex plane, a calculator for complex polynomes is included. (Screenshot)

Papers

• Digital Money (Marketing, E-Commerce / 1999 / Paper in german): Final project of the last semester. Extensive analysis of the payment systems on the Swiss E-Commerce market. Design of a micropayment connection to the project EFTPOS.
• Genetic Algorithms (Neuronal Networks / 1999): As a supplement of the course Neuronal Networks of W. Businger I presented a practical approach to genetic algorithms. The theory is illustrated with the example implementation of "The Travelling Salesman".
• Wearable Things (Marketing, E-Commerce / 1999 / Paper in German): Wearable Things that think - this subject is cause of many fancy projects e.g. at the MIT. We discuss some examples and in particular the technical background, applications, business-model and future possibilities of the famouse Swatch Access watch.
• Bio-ID (Information Systems / 1999 / Paper in German): Modern Identification systems should not rely on simple passwords. A possible work around are biometrical identifications. Besides, zero knowledge cryptology algorithms provide an even higher security and anonymity for the user.
• The DNA of information (Marketing, E-Commerce / 1999 / Paper in German): Nicholas Negropontes chapter in "Being Digital" about "The DNA of information" points out some interesting ideas. The paper discusses what this DNA might be, how we notice or use the DNA of information and what future applications possibly are.
• Digital Money (Cryptology / 1999): Describes the requirements for modern digital money. Main part is the "inside look" of a cryptographic protocol with anonymity, blind signature and double spending protection.
• Die Seuche (German / 1997 / Paper in German): In-depth analysis of the novel "Die Seuche" of the Swiss author Lukas Hartmann. The book (the title translates to "The Epidemic") is about the relations of two main epidemics threatening mankind: The ancient plague and nowadays AIDS.
• Economy Summary (Economy / 1996, 1997 / Paper in German): Summary of our economy course of the first two years. Two thick files compressed to about 50 pages. The subjects covered are: Accountancy, Management, Procurement, Production.

Skiing Instructor 2001-12 - 2002-04	I decided to change climate thoroughly after the two interesting years at the HTA Biel. For one season I was working at the ski school of Obersaxen as a ski teacher. Education in a one-week course as Kids Ski Instructor. That was actually a great thing, even for an engineer ;-) To teach the people all the fun one can have on two skis was indeed a satisfactory!
Ski Guide 1994 - 1999	Education as ski guide 1994 (Jugend+Sport Ski 1). Leader of scout ski groups at Kandersteg International Scout Center (KISC). (Picture: Skiing in a little resort in the Emmental.)
Scout Disctrict Leader 1995-04 - 2002-07	Education in a two-weekend course. Leader of the scout district Turmfalken, part of the Swiss scout association PBS. International Scout Camps 1992, 1996, 1999, 2000	As participant of international scout camps in Europe and Mexico I had the chance to get in touch with a rich mixture of cultures and scout traditions. Scout Group Leader 1990 - 1995	Education in two one-week courses 1991 and 1992 (Jugend+Sport W+G 1/2). Leader of a scout group in the district Turmfalken with about 20-30 girl guides and boy scouts in the age of 11-20. Several two-week camps and leader in technical courses. Spokesman of Class 1996-2000	During the studies at the HTA Biel Studies spokesman of the class providing connections to the dean of the computer science division in case of arguments and serving the class with different informations.
Spokesman of Apprentices 1994 - 1999	During my apprenticeship at Swisscom spokesman of about 20 apprentices. Responsible for requests to superiors and several out-of-the-work activities.
