An Email message from Mr Joseph R. Applegarth, dated the 17th Nov 1998
... I have been searching in vain for a long lost relative of mine. He emigrated to the USA from Berne on 13 March 1935 aboard a ship called the Macedonia, arriving in New York 22 June 1835. He eventually migrated into Belmont County, Ohio USA where he died 29 March 1888. He was my g-g-g-grandfather his name was Jakob, or Jacob Rufer. The information I have on him was that he was born in Berne 19 Nov 1814. I have researched many records of individuals of the same name that have turned up in Germany, but have been unable to find this particular Jacob. ...

... Are you interested in assisting me with some research efforts?  I have John Jacob RUFER married to Elizabeth FITCH... Joe has him married to a ROBINSON..... I will go into my RUFER folder and share with you the information my grandmother, Gertrude May MUSSARD, g granddaughter of John Jacob RUFER gave to me back in 1977.  My g mother is now dead, died at age 93.... But I have the original notes and story she told me about John Jacob coming to US with wife and they had an inheritance which there was enough left for my g mother to inherit years later.  Do you have the name of the ship?  Do you know who his wife was in Berne? ...
